FUGGENTI FIGURE

Photographs by Arda Asena, Edoardo Cozzani, Dani Lessnau

Allen Frame, Curator

From 5 to 28 june

Opening Tuesday, June 5 at 7 PM

Three photographers present new work that depicts figures suspended in a trance-like atmosphere; the highly subjective images seem both mythic and fleeting.

Arda Asena, from Istanbul, constructs unsettling portraits in the studio, posing an elaborately veiled figure in an dramatic but undefined setting. The artist’s own nude self-portrait, also included, is sensual and enigmatic, like a dream figure encountered in a dark, private chamber of the artist’s psyche.

Edoardo Cozzani, from Rome, depicts ancient statuary and contemporary landscapes, animating them with a deconstructive approach that involves blur, layering, and multiple exposure. Subjects that would seem immobile or fixed become provisional and mysteriously alive.

Dani Lessnau eschews a traditional camera, instead using a pinhole camera to capture black and white images of intimate encounters, like x-rays of desire and the libido. They complicate the notion of the photographer’s muse. The artist is both receptive and in control; the images are both raw and formal.

Fuggenti Figure is the second part of a curatorial effort by Allen Frame, a photographer himself who is spending the year in Rome in a residency at the American Academy. He teaches photography in New York at several schools including the International Centre of Photography. Like his previous show, Illusione Persistene, (April 13-May 5), Fuggenti Figure explores new directions by emerging photographers who attended ICP. Once known for its emphasis on photojournalistic reportage, ICP is now at the forefront of experimental and conceptual directions in fine art photography. The artists’ work in both exhibitions transforms notions of reality into private evocations of myth, dream, sexuality and identity.

FUGGENTI FIGURE – Fotografie di Arda Asena, Edoardo Cozzani, Dani Lessnau

FUGGENTI FIGURE

Egli stesso fotografo, insegna a New York in diverse scuole di fotografia, incluso l’International Center of Photography.

This exhibition is part of the project brought forward by the cultural association Acta International with the goal of offering visibility to emerging young artists. The work of the young Apulian photographer, Nicoletta Tempesta, began and has taken form through her studies in the photographic field, coupled with her strong passion for art. Beyond her documentary shots, the viewer will be accompanied on a journey that will investigate the emotionally complex relationship between the museum and its reflections—reflections of ancient statues that fill the environment with charm and mystery, with which the artist creates a secret bond.

”She was there, in front of me, and yet my gaze was not fixed on her, it was not direct, it was filtered, reflected, deviated: she seemed to be spying. I watched her, shy, almost hiding a secret. A look had united us, and I wanted to capture the intimacy that had been created in a shot.”

So, does the Apulian photographer describe her bond, immortalized by her shots, focusing on the value and depth of her intimate and secret relationship. This relationship is precisely the fulcrum of her photographic philosophy, from her choice of backgrounds to her various subjects, from contrasts to various nuances.

ILLUSIONE PERSISTENTE – Photografs by Gabriele Giugni, Federico Grandicelli, Michela Palermo

ILLUSIONE PERSISTENTE

Fotografie di Gabriele Giugni, Federico Grandicelli, Michela Palermo

a cura di Allen Frame

13 aprile – 5 maggio 2018

inaugurazione 13 aprile, ore 19

Gabriele Giugni’s urban figures on the street at night look like outtakes from a dream, characters in a fugue state caught in the momentary glare of a neon sign or traffic light. Michela Palermo’s intimate grainy figures are glimpsed closeup, suspended in the abstract dark of cinematic situations, raw and remembered. Federico Grandicelli’s silver gelatin photograms have a material immediacy, folded into sculpture like an indexical paradox, or as prints on the wall, tonal sighs of subtle manipulation.

The three Italian photographers all studied, at different times, at the International Center of Photography in NY, a school and museum founded by Magnum photographer Cornell Cape but now as much associated with new directions in art photography as with reportage. The curator, photographer Allen Frame, teaches at ICP but is doing a year-long residency at the American Academy in Rome. His own work was part of a three-person show at ACTA International in 2014. Now in a different role, he is organizing two exhibitions for ACTA; the second one, also with three photographers, opens June 5th.

ILLUSIONE PERSISTENTE

13 aprile – 5 maggio 2018

inaugurazione 13 aprile, ore 19
