Ten Eyes Plus Two is a photographic project by Claudia Chianese, carried out during 2012 in collaboration with the Sandipani Muni School of Vrindavana, India.

The artist, moved by the desire to promote creativity and self-reliance in the children – values she’s always believed in – places five digital cameras in the hands of five young students, their first experience behind the lens. The report takes a week. Photographing all together: an unfiltered story that grazes the layers of daily life in which the freshness of gestures, contradictions, and concerns overlap alternatively

In the shots of these children, who are intentionally not associated with the lone author, one can feel the enthusiasm of the discovery of the photographic medium and an approach unwittingly tuned to that of the great Indian interpreters such as Homai Vyarawala, the first Indian photojournalist, Raghu Rai and Raghubir Singh up to Dayanita Singh at the beginning of the next generation of photojournalists.

In Claudia Chianese’s view, however, the eagerness to document all aspects of the reality protected by the school, the internal dynamics through which the organism is able to feed itself.

Above all it’s the objects that speak: garbage cans colored green-yellow-blue for the collection of specific types of garbage, backpacks resting on benches, the refrigerator, paintings hung crookedly, the stuffed animal on the nurse’s bed, a plastic artist’s palette with watercolors on its shiny surface reflecting the photograph.

This double look – inside / outside, the West / East on Ten Eyes Plus Two is built focuses on the importance of the value of education, respect for the human being. “I asked those five children what they wanted to do when they get big.” – The artist affirms – “They all said they wanted to continue studying. There were those who wanted to be a doctor, others a psychoanalyst or a chemist—professions that could be used to help others.”

The study is the alternative to doom. Don’t only look frontally. “- Claudia repeated to her young students of the Sandipani Muni School of Vrindavan -“There are other points of view to look at reality.”
