GP : Brigitte, vorrei sapere come è nata a Leonard l’idea di fare un lavoro interamente dedicato al nudo e pertanto così diverso da tutte le sue precedenti esperienze professionali. Come fotografo dell’agenzia Magnum, ma anche prima, la sua attenzione si era sempre rivolta a temi di natura socio-politica.
BF : Veramente questa idea era venuta a una nostra amica francese, Amelie, che venne a trovarci qui a Garrison. Amelie era stata modella di pittori a Parigi. Il suo grande desiderio era quello di posare e venire ritratta, nuda, da uno dei grandi nomi del mondo della fotografia. Lo aveva chiesto a Irving Penn, ad Avedon e credo ad altri che però non avevano accettato.
Leonard rimase molto perplesso di fronte a questa richiesta e mi chiese cosa fare.Decidemmo insieme che cimentarsi anche in questo campo. In fondo era per lui una sfida.
GP: Ma la modella fotografata in questo lavoro è Kate.
BF : Esatto. Kate era mia amica. La conoscevo da una decina di anni. Sapevo che era una ottima insegnante di yoga e una persona completamente disinibita. Ero sicura che avrebbe avuto delle idee per costruire l’ambiente adatto per questo lavoro. Kate suggerì di usare come sfondo gli interni di alcune gallerie d’arte di questa zona. Nelle prime foto sono ritratte le due donne, ma poi Leonard decise che la protagonista dovesse essere Kate. Una volta mi disse: Se non fosse stato per Kate, non avrei scattato alcuna foto. Kate fu la regista e Leonard fu il fotografo.
GP : Infatti in alcune foto Kate è ritratta assieme a degli oggetti d’arte. In altre invece è immersa nella natura e si scorge solo in lontananza il profilo della città.
BF: Kate, Leonard e un loro amico decisero di fare un lungo tour in macchina e arrivarono sino a San Francisco. Così in alcune immagini lo scenario è la bellissima costa della California, o la città di San Francisco,o il deserto del Nevada.
Leonard ritornò molto molto soddisfatto da questo viaggio. Aveva 73 anni e non aveva mai ritratto dei nudi in questa maniera.

CONVERSATION BETWEEN BRIGITTE FREED AND GIOVANNA PENNACCHI

GP: Brigitte, I would like to know how the idea came to Leonard of a work entirely dedicated to the nude, and as such so different from all his previous professional experiences as a photographer with the Magnum agency. Even before Magnum, his attention was always focused on themes of a sociopolitical nature.
BF: Really this idea came from a French friend of ours, Amelie, who came to visit us here in Garrison. Amelie had been a model for painters in Paris. Her great desire was to pose and be portrayed nude by one of the important names in the photography world. She had asked Irving Penn, Avedon and I think others, but they did not accept.
Leonard was very perplexed by this request and asked me what to do. Together, we decided to get involved in this field. It turned out to be a challenge for him.
GP: But the model photographed in this work is Kate.
BF: That’s right. Kate was my friend. I had known her for about ten years. I knew she was a great yoga teacher and a completely uninhibited person. I was sure that she would have some ideas to create the right environment for this work. Kate suggested using some art galleries in this area as interior backgrounds. In the first photo, the two women are portrayed, but then Leonard decided that the main model had to be Kate. He once told me: Had it not been for Kate, I would not have taken any photos. Kate was the director, and Leonard was the photographer.
GP: In fact, in some photos Kate is portrayed along with objets d’art. In others she is immersed in nature and the city skyline can be made out only in the distance.
BF: Kate, Leonard and one of their friends decided to go on a long automobile trip, traveling as far as San Francisco. So in some images, the scenery is the beautiful coast of California, or the city of San Francisco, or the Nevada desert.
Leonard returned from this trip extremely satisfied. At age 73, he had never before portrayed the nude in this manner.
